About GE

GE traces its beginnings to Thomas A. Edison, who established Edison Electric Light Company in 1878. In 1892, a merger of Edison General Electric Company and Thomson-Houston Electric Company created General Electric Company.

From Edison’s first commercially viable light bulb to the first X-ray machines, GE has continued to innovate. GE was there for the first walk on the moon, created the first television network, the first man-made diamond and the first jet engine.

GE is the only company listed in the Dow Jones Industrial Index today that was also included in the original index in 1896.

With products and services ranging from aircraft engines, power generation, water processing and security technology to medical imaging, business and consumer financing, media content and industrial products, GE has customers in more than 100 countries and employs more than 300,000 people worldwide.
