With its mission of ensuring more young people are better equipped for and inspired about a career in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM), STEMNET shares many common aims with GE.
One of the ways you can get involved is via the Science and Engineering Ambassadors (SEAs) programme, which provides role models from STEM-related careers. There is no typical ambassador - jobs range from aeronautical engineering apprentices to medical physicists to lab technicians. Anyone who has an interest in STEM and a desire to inspire children and young people about these subjects can become an Ambassador.
Ambassadors can get involved in many ways, such as supporting activities like Science and Engineering clubs, helping with competitions, supporting extra curricular STEM experiences or advising teachers by keeping them up to date with recent research and techniques. GE Energy in the US have produced some great worksheets that you can use in schools, they are known as Just4Kids
‘Having the extra help from volunteers is invaluable. It enables us to bring science alive with children, something which can be hard to achieve in a classroomsituation.’
If you would like to get involved, please contact your local volunteering leader and see if there is an opportunity in your area.
